What is a suspended platform?
A suspended platform is a work platform that hangs from steel wire ropes. The ropes are fixed to the roof of a building. Workers stand on the platform and move up and down the wall using electric hoists.
People also call it a cradle, a gondola, a swing stage or a rope suspended platform (RSP). It is a temporary setup. You put it up for the job and take it down after.
What does ZLP800 mean?
ZLP is the common series name for rope suspended platforms. The number is the rated load in kilograms. So a ZLP800 carries 800 kg and a ZLP630 carries 630 kg. That weight includes people, tools and materials.
How does it work?
- A steel rig is set on the roof. Counterweights hold it down.
- Two steel wire ropes hang from the rig. A separate safety rope hangs beside each one.
- The platform has two electric hoists. They climb the ropes and carry the platform up or down.
- If the platform tilts or a rope breaks, the safety lock grips the safety rope and stops the fall.

Safety features and standards
A suspended platform carries people high above the ground. Safety is not optional. Every ZLP platform should have these parts:
- Two working ropes and two safety ropes. The safety rope is separate from the one that lifts.
- Safety lock. It grips the safety rope if the platform tilts too far or a rope breaks. Ours is an anti-tilting lock rated at 30 kN.
- Hoist brake. It holds the platform still when the motor stops.
- Overload and limit protection. These stop the platform from going too high or carrying too much.
- Emergency lowering. It lets the platform come down if power fails.
- Strong counterweights. They stop the roof rig from tipping.
- Guard rails and toe boards around the platform.
- Earthing and a proper control box for the electrics.
Which standards apply?
In Europe, suspended access equipment is covered by EN 1808. It sets rules for design, calculations, stability, tests and marking. A new revision is in development. In India, IS 15951:2011 is the BIS code of practice for temporary access equipment such as suspended scaffolds.
On your site, also follow your site safety plan and the maker’s manual. Use only trained workers. Ask any seller for their test records before you pay.
Daily checks before use
Walk through this list every morning before anyone steps on the platform.
- Look at all wire ropes for broken strands, kinks or rust.
- Test the safety lock. It should grip the safety rope.
- Check the hoists and brakes for noise, heat or oil leaks.
- Check the cables and control box for cuts or loose wires.
- Check counterweights and roof rig. Nothing should move.
- Check guard rails, toe boards and platform bolts.
- Confirm the load is under 800 kg, including people.
- Keep a written log. Sign it each day.
